I have a Dell Dimension 8100 which has a built-in integrate NIC - 3C920 (compatible with 3C905C-TX). Windows Vista Ultimate set-up [clean install formatting previous MS Server 2003 partition] failed to install the appropriate drivers. I have loaded and expanded the 3x91c EtherDisc Disk1 software. Using the control panel/system/Device Manager and Update Driver for the NIC gives the following message: "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX ccompatible) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element."
I've run out of ideas and options on how to tackle this problem - no network, no activation, no updates - other than to buy a new card. Help me please

Ethernet Controller (3Com 3C920) - Installation Error
The problem is now solved. The Dell version of the NIC drivers was not good. The 3Com version finally worked when I finally managed to work out and control where the DOS type expansion program put the actual files. I had to go deeply under the hood to do this - the Vista interface was not helpful or appropriate in situations like this. But why on earth didn't the Beta 2 release recognise the NIC and automatically install the correct drivers. During set-up the panel indicated that it was searching for and downloading updates from the internet, and the HD disc whirred for some considerable time during this process. To cap it all, when I finally got the network set up and visited Windows Update for Vista, it gave me an option to download an update driver for the 3Com 3C920!
Still 2 other devices to find drivers for - sorry, now 1 - while I was typing Vista has just given me a message that the Creative Game Port (on my Audigy 2 Platinum) [described intially as a Simple Input Device] has just installed itself successfully without any intervention from me.
The other one, which I think was described as a Communications Controller, has also apparently been installed correctly as the Control Panel/ WelcomeCenter / Set Up Devices now reports all devices now installed correctly.
It's taken me about 7 hours to sort this out - hopefully, the final version will be able to avoid these tribulations over what seem fairly standard and widely used pieces of kit.

You have several choices:
1. Get a newer NIC.
2. Find out the chipset on 3C920 and load it. It may be a realtek chiipset.
3. Look at the Dell support forums.

Cheers mate Got the e-x-a-c-t same problem... do you remember the location for the driver (as deep under the hood as it was...)?
thanks in advance Daniel -- DP

Where did you find drivers for 3C905C-TX? I have looked everywhere without success.

We are having the exact same problem with the driver for an RTL8150 USB to ethernet adapter. Interesting that both of these devices are network devices. I eventually got the driver to install by uninstalling the device with device manager and letting plug and play find the driver. This was AFTER plug and play FAILED the first time. No matter how many times or methods I used to direct the system to install the specific inf file for the device, I got a dialog in which the only information on it was a title saying "Error" and text saying "Installation failed." For more complete information, you can find the thread by searching for "RTL8150" in all "Windows Vista Newsgroups"; it will be the only thread found.

Ok you said the dell version of the NIC drivers was not good, but apparently it was good enough for xp to automatically recognize and install. I tried loading three different 3com drivers and Vista burped all of them back. One of them even crashed the system, with a black screen that would reveal the original screen as you moved your mouse over it. So you went under the hood, how exactly? I tried every which way with the three versions of the 3com driver which I know are all compatible with xp with no problem because I tried them even though I don't need them because xp automatically recognizes this device. I went through device manager, and referred to the location of the drivers, I tried the setup.exe from the driver folder, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with these drivers everything that should have worked on the most basic OS. So even though I think it's ridiculous to have to go under the hood so to speak for something like this how exactly did you do it Mr.John Tempest?

Open your .inf file and check if there is anything in there. I openned mine on the Vista PC and they were all empty. I ended up compressing the file and copying across then extracting it on the Vista PC. Once I could see something in the .inf files I was able to install the drivers no problem.
Is that a feature or a bug?
